NHS Workforce Challenges

  • Nurses on a ward
  • What we're doing

Building on our workforce data briefing from 2023, the report provides an overview of NHS workforce planning arrangements locally and nationally. It considers the progress being made in tackling some of the key challenges identified in our data briefing, and further actions needed to help create a sustainable NHS workforce.

    Why we're doing it

Despite year-on-year growth in numbers and cost, the NHS workforce is under increasing pressure from rising demand and challenges with recruitment, retention, sickness absence and staff well-being. We are looking for evidence of action at both a local and national level to tackle these challenges and develop an NHS workforce that is fit for purpose and future proof.

    When we'll report

    Winter 2024-25
