The NHS consultant contract is the national framework that governs the working conditions and salary grades of consultants. The Amendment to the National Consultant Contract in Wales came into effect on 1 December 2003, and was the first major change to consultants‟ terms and conditions since 1948. The contract brought in a number of benefits for consultants: a new salary scale; improved arrangements for on-call remuneration; new arrangements for clinical commitment and clinical excellence awards; and a commitment to improve flexible working.
