Dr Ian J Rees

A native of Swansea, Dr Ian Rees has spent his career in education and training in Wales and has developed considerable experience working on a regional and national level.

A Physicist by education, he developed a career in education and was secondary school Headteacher at Ysgol y Moelwyn, Blaenau Ffestiniog from where he moved to Further Education as Principal and Chief Executive of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

During 2010 he brokered and led the merger of Coleg Meirion Dwyfor and Coleg Llandrillo Cymru. He also took one of the lead roles when Coleg Menai joined to form Grŵp Llandrillo Menai in April 2012. He retired in January 2019 from his role as Executive Director of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and now undertakes some work as an Educational and Training Consultant. He is also a member of the Council of Bangor University.

Over the years he has been a member of a number of regional and national groups including Nant Gwrtheyrn, a member of the ELWa Mid Wales Regional Committee as well as a member of the Board for fforwm (now ColegauCymru) and Careers Wales (North West Wales). He was a member of the Arts Council of Wales for 6 years and Vice Chairman of the Council for three years. Between April 2012 and March 2015 was Chairman of the Advisory Panel for the Welsh Language Commissioner. In April 2015 he joined the Audit and Risk Committee for the Welsh Language Commissioner and was Chair of the committee between 2018 and Summer 2020.

He lives in Cricieth with his wife and enjoys sport (by now as a spectator), music (especially choral) and current affairs.
